The Importance of Small Businesses in Local Communities

Small businesses are a major part of what keeps local communities strong.

They do more than provide products or services. They create jobs, support families, build relationships, and keep money circulating closer to home. In fact, small businesses represent 99.9% of all U.S. firms and employ a substantial share of the private-sector workforce, making them one of the foundations of the American economy.

But their value is not measured by numbers alone.

Small businesses are often owned by people who live in the communities they serve. That local connection matters. It means the business owner has a personal stake in the neighborhood, the local economy, and the people around them. Their success is tied to the success of the community itself.

This often leads to stronger customer service, better accountability, and more meaningful community involvement. Small businesses are more likely to sponsor local events, support school programs, donate to charitable causes, and contribute in ways that go beyond the transaction. Commentary from Forbes notes that shopping local helps nurture community identity, strengthen economic resilience, and keep neighborhoods vibrant.

Small businesses also help promote diversity and opportunity. They often reflect the character, culture, and needs of the communities they serve. They create entry points for entrepreneurship, allow families to build something of their own, and add variety and individuality to the local economy.

Their role in job creation is especially important. According to the SBA Office of Advocacy, small businesses accounted for 61.1% of net new job creation from January 1995 to June 2023. That kind of growth shows just how essential small businesses are to economic opportunity across the country.

When people choose to support small businesses, they are doing more than making a purchase. They are investing in local jobs, local ownership, and the long-term health of the places where they live and work.

Strong communities are built by people who care about where they live. Small businesses are often at the center of that.
